I’m bearing the 110 degree heat to attend VMworld this week in Las Vegas with the Doyenz crew. We’re proud to be part of the New Innovators Showcase with a ton of other great virtualization and cloud computing startups!

Every business has a responsibility to be a good member of the community, but it’s people who make these programs run. Many of you already give back and have experienced the benefits of doing so, and for those who have yet to get involved in the community: think about ways you can scale down a CSR program to fit your business. If you’re a small business, find a nonprofit that already exists in your city and get behind it however you can.
Returning to a Thank You Economy
I just returned from 5-days at SXSW Interactive in Austin, Texas. Gary Vaynerchuk delivered the conference keynote, and was hands-down the best session I attended this year. And I wasn’t the only one inspired and challenged by his talk — the entire room gave him a standing ovation. Here are my notes from the session.
Live from the CNN Grill in Austin, Texas…
The key to success with any social media platform is not to inundate your community members with sales message after sales message. Make sure your messaging is not all about you. Post educational content, industry news and include your marketing messages as well. Social media management is an emerging art form, really, and timing and frequency of posting can play a huge factor in how successful a small business will be online.
In the News: Interview on ClickZ
Christopher Heine interviewed me last week for a piece on using QR codes in marketing campaigns.
“We’ve really hit a plateau and want to up our numbers on Facebook and Twitter this week,” Dunn said. “We put our Facebook page URL on the [print] materials as well for people who are not familiar with QR codes.”

TechCrunch Disrupt SF 2010 Wrapup
Couldn’t attend TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco last week? Here are the highlights from the conference so that you’re in the know:
- The winner of the TechCrunch Disrupt Hackathon was a 22-year-old programmer, J’amie Ohm, who built an app called WiseDame that is looking to revolutionize personal security for females (though I think men can use it too). She announced to the crowd that she’s looking for a mentor, and something tells me this whiz-kid will have no problem finding one. Follow her on Twitter: @jaimeohm
- Google CEO Eric Schmidt revealed that Google is investing in a health question infrastructure. Schmidt said that 3 to 5 percent of queries on Google are health related. TechCrunch’s video of his talk here.

We just went live with the final episode of a 5-part video series on the gulf oil spill. It’s been a true honor to produce this series alongside oceans expert and adventurer Jon Bowermaster. Video footage was excerpted from his documentary film SoLa: Louisiana Water Stories. All five videos are available over at HuffPost.
From JD Lasica at Socialbrite:
The single most difficult issue that those of us in the social change movement confront is: figuring out how to get people to take action. So I’ve been paying close attention over the months to the successful efforts of TakePart, an initiative of Participant Media.
I recently ran into Adriana Dunn, editor of the TakePart blog, and caught some of her thoughts about the lessons they’ve learned in participatory media. Adriana just wrote an entry about major events related to The Cove, winner of the Oscar for best feature documentary, over the past 18 months. They’ve just passed the 1 million petition mark, but you can sign the petition, write to elected officials or make a donation.
